Iowa music fans may be interested to learn that country singer Michael Ray has been taken into custody for alleged drug possession and drunk driving. The incident took place in Florida on Dec. 20.
According to media reports, Ray was at a McDonald’s drive-thru at approximately 3 a.m. when he rear-ended another vehicle with his Jeep Wrangler. The 29-year-old told responding officers that the accident occurred because his foot slipped off of the brake pedal. However, the police report notes that he had bloodshot eyes and was slurring his words.
Ray, who is known for the hit songs “Kiss You in the Morning” and “Think a Little Less”, eventually told police he was driving home from an area bar. Officers conducted a search and discovered cannabis oil in his pocket. They also subjected the singer to a series of field sobriety tests, which he allegedly failed. He was placed under arrest and taken to Lake County Jail for processing. He was charged with driving under the influence and marijuana possession and held on a $6,000 bond.
Drunk driving charges carry serious consequences in Iowa. If convicted, individuals facing such charges could be sentenced to lengthy periods of incarceration and be imposed steep fines. They could also have their driver’s license suspended or revoked. In order to protect their future, many defendants choose to retain a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. After reviewing the circumstances, an attorney may choose in some cases to challenge the traffic stop that led to the arrest as being made without the requisite reasonable suspicion.
