DUI and the holiday season

On Behalf of | Oct 3, 2017 | Drunk Driving |

Now that we’re into the month of October, it’s safe to say that the holiday season is just about in full swing.

First comes Halloween, which is followed by Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve.

While there is nothing wrong with having a good time during the holiday season, you need to know when to stop. For example, you never want to drink alcohol and then get behind the wheel of a vehicle. This increases the likelihood of an accident, as well as an arrest that could land you in hot water.

There are many ways to prevent DUI during the holiday season, including but not limited to:

  • Stay at home to ensure that you don’t have to drive home after drinking
  • Take a designated driver with you
  • Search for other ways to enjoy yourself

A growing number of states are cracking down on drinking and driving, realizing that entirely too many accidents are a result of this behavior. This is even more so the case during the holiday season, when law enforcement knows that a larger number of people will be drinking and driving.

If you make the mistake of drinking and driving and are subsequently pulled over, you need to understand your legal rights. As scared as you may be, you have rights, such as the option to ask the officer why you were pulled over.

If you are in trouble for driving under the influence of alcohol, the court system awaits. There are many factors that will determine your potential punishment, including if you have past DUI arrests and if you committed additional crimes.

Learning more about your legal rights will put you in position to deal with anything that comes your way during this difficult time.
