Two people face felony charges following drug investigation

On Behalf of | Nov 20, 2017 | Drug Charges |

Authorities in Iowa say that six people have been taken into police custody in connection with a drug bust in Newton on Nov. 7. According to news sources, this number includes two alleged heroin dealers, who are now facing possession with the intent to deliver and additional serious charges. The four remaining detainees are facing paraphernalia, possession of drugs or other misdemeanor charges.

The investigation was conducted by the Mid-Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force in response to the large number of heroin overdoses that had occurred in the Newton area during the weeks prior to the bust. In response to this issue, the Iowa EMS Association president noted that the number of opioid overdoses across the country is continuing to increase. The official expressed hope that the joint efforts of first respondents, law enforcement personnel and others will slow the opioid abuse epidemic that appears to be moving across the state from east to west. Sources say that the number of recent overdoses that have occurred locally is not immediately available.

Among other drugs, investigators found heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine in the Newton home that was central to the investigation. During the bust, investigators also determined one of the alleged heroin dealers had several warrants.

Constitutional search and seizure is a complicated area of the law, and residents of Iowa who believe that officials may have violated their rights during a drug investigation may want to seek legal assistance from a criminal defense attorney. The attorney could represent their interests in court and possibly achieve a dismissal of the drug charges. If formal charges have not yet been issued, the attorney could mitigate the potential consequences of an indictment and possibly help the client avoid spending time in jail.
